Professions Regulated by the Council
The Council of Veterinary Surgeons of Zimbabwe regulates veterinary surgeons and veterinary paraprofessionals as part of its statutory mandate to regulate the veterinary profession and promote the improvement of veterinary services in Zimbabwe.
Veterinary Surgeons
Veterinary Surgeons lead the veterinary team, entrusted with preventing, diagnosing, and treating animal diseases, preserving animal welfare, safeguarding public health, enhancing productivity in food systems, and protecting livelihoods. Their work upholds the ethical care of animals, strengthens community resilience and supports national development.
Veterinary Nurses
Veterinary nurses are the heart of compassionate and competent animal care, serving as essential members of the veterinary workforce. They support veterinary surgeons in clinical practice through patient care, anaesthesia support, treatment assistance, and monitoring of recovery. They also play a vital role in client education, disease prevention, and the promotion of animal welfare. Combining technical skill with empathy, veterinary nurses contribute significantly to animal health, public health, environmental stewardship, and the resilience of the communities that depend on them.
Veterinary Laboratory Technologists
Veterinary Laboratory Technologists support animal health through accurate, reliable and quality-assured laboratory diagnostics. They perform and analyse diagnostic tests in accordance with established standards and procedures, maintain laboratory equipment and infrastructure, and contribute to the development and validation of diagnostic methods. Their work provides the veterinary workforce with essential laboratory information for diagnosis, treatment and disease surveillance. They also contribute to public health, food safety, zoonotic disease monitoring and national biosecurity, thereby strengthening animal health systems and supporting resilient communities.
